Propolis Tincture UK: How to Choose, Store and Use

A propolis tincture is a liquid extract of propolis — the resin-based material honeybees collect from tree buds and bark and work together with beeswax — made by steeping ground raw propolis in ethanol, then filtering out the wax and debris. In the UK it is sold as a food, usually in small amber-glass dropper bottles at a stated strength of around 10–30%. When you are choosing one, the details that matter are the solvent, the extraction ratio, the declared origin of the raw propolis, and whether the seller publishes batch test results.

What is propolis?

Propolis is the sticky material honeybees make by gathering resin from tree buds and bark and blending it with beeswax and their own secretions. Bees use it as a building material: sealing gaps and cracks, smoothing rough surfaces and coating the inside walls of the hive. The name is Greek — pro (in front of) and polis (city) — a reference to the way bees narrow the hive entrance with it.

What is in propolis depends on where the bees live, because its chemistry follows the local flora. In northern and central Europe the dominant resin source is poplar bud; around the Mediterranean, bees also draw on pine, cypress and other regional species. You will often see a fixed breakdown quoted — 50% resin, 30% wax, 10% oils, 5% pollen — but researchers who went looking for the original data behind those figures found none, and real samples vary too widely for one set of percentages to hold. The honest description is: mostly plant resin, a substantial share of beeswax, and small amounts of pollen and plant volatiles, in proportions that shift with region, season and hive.

Raw propolis is hard and brittle when cold, soft and sticky when warm — awkward to handle either way. That is the practical reason most propolis is sold as a liquid extract rather than as raw resin.

Tincture or extract — is there a difference?

In UK shops, not one you can rely on: “propolis tincture” and “propolis extract” are used almost interchangeably. Strictly speaking, a tincture is an extract made with alcohol, while “extract” is the broader term — it covers alcohol, glycerine, propylene glycol and water preparations, plus concentrated and dried forms.

Because the naming is loose, read the ingredients list rather than the product name. It tells you the solvent, and a better label also states the extraction ratio or percentage. A product called an “extract” with ethanol in the ingredients is a tincture in all but name; a product called a “tincture” made on glycerine is not one in the strict sense.

How is a propolis tincture made?

By maceration — a long, cold steep. Raw propolis is cleaned of debris, chilled until brittle, and ground to a coarse powder. The powder goes into food-grade ethanol, most commonly at around 70% strength, at a set ratio of propolis to solvent — 1:10 to 1:5 covers most of commercial practice and the research literature alike. The mixture stands for days to weeks, shaken or stirred regularly, while the alcohol-soluble resin fraction dissolves.

Filtration finishes the job. Beeswax dissolves poorly in ethanol–water mixtures, so filtering removes most of the wax along with any remaining debris. Some producers add a cold-settling step, chilling the filtered liquid so residual wax solidifies and can be filtered off again. The result is a deep red-brown liquid with a strong resinous smell.

What do the strength figures on the label mean?

Usually, how much raw propolis went into the maceration — not how much of it ended up dissolved in your bottle. A “30% tincture” typically means 30 g of raw propolis per 100 ml of solvent; an extraction ratio of 1:10 means one part propolis to ten parts solvent, roughly a 10% preparation.

Here is the catch: raw propolis carries wax and debris that never make it into the finished liquid, and the resin share of raw propolis itself varies. Two products both labelled “30%” can hold different amounts of dissolved resin. The more meaningful numbers are the ones a laboratory measures on the finished liquid: dry matter (dissolved solids) per millilitre, and the marker compounds producers track to check batch-to-batch consistency. A seller that publishes a certificate of analysis (COA) for each batch replaces guesswork with data — the reason we treat batch testing as non-negotiable.

Alcohol or alcohol-free — what is the difference?

Ethanol is the standard solvent because it dissolves the resin fraction efficiently; alcohol-free products use different carriers and are genuinely different preparations. Glycerine dissolves considerably less of the resin than ethanol does, so a straight glycerine maceration is typically lighter in colour and milder in taste, with less dissolved material at the same stated ratio. Propylene glycol is closer to ethanol in what it takes up. A third route exists: evaporating the ethanol off a finished extract and re-dispersing the residue in glycerine or water.

None of this makes one format better — it makes them different, and it makes disclosure matter even more for alcohol-free products, where the stated percentage tells you less about dissolved solids. If you want to avoid alcohol, look for a maker who names the carrier and publishes dissolved-solids or marker-compound figures. If alcohol is acceptable, note that a tincture is typically 60–80% ethanol by volume — the alcohol content is not zero, and the label should state it.

How do you choose a good propolis tincture in the UK?

Look for full disclosure. A good product tells you what went in, at what ratio, from where, and what a laboratory found in the finished batch. Specifically:

  • Stated strength or ratio. A percentage or a figure such as 1:10, not just the word “concentrated”.
  • Named solvent. Ethanol, glycerine or propylene glycol — with the ethanol strength if given.
  • Declared origin. Propolis chemistry follows local flora, so region of origin is real information, not garnish. “Blend of EU and non-EU” tells you very little.
  • Batch testing. A published COA covering identity, marker compounds and contaminant screening.
  • Amber glass. Dark glass keeps light off the liquid; propolis tinctures are sold in brown or amber bottles for a reason.
  • A usable dropper. Glass pipettes with a bulb are easier to control and clean than plastic drip inserts, which propolis residue can clog and stain.
  • A batch or harvest date, not only a best-before.

How should you store a propolis tincture?

Cool, dark and tightly capped. Keep the bottle upright in a cupboard, away from heat and direct sunlight; refrigeration is not needed. Ethanol at tincture strengths is itself a preservative, so alcohol-based tinctures typically carry long best-before dates, while alcohol-free versions are generally shorter-lived — check the label. A layer of sediment is normal: resin settles, so shake before use. Keep it out of reach of young children.

What is a propolis tincture actually like to use?

Strong. The taste is resinous, bitter and lingering, and the liquid stains. The usual approach is counting drops from the pipette onto a spoon, into water or onto food. Dropped into water, a tincture instantly turns the water milky: the resins are not water-soluble and come out of solution as a fine suspension. That is normal, not a fault.

Handle it with respect for surfaces. Propolis residue sets hard and marks fabric, worktops and plastics; dried drips need alcohol to shift. Wipe spills at once, and keep the bottle on a saucer rather than a painted windowsill.

Allergy warning. Propolis can cause allergic reactions, including serious ones, and repeated skin contact can cause sensitisation. If you are allergic to bee stings or other bee products, do not take propolis in any format — alcohol-based or not.

How do the propolis formats compare?

A tincture is one of four ways propolis is commonly sold in the UK; the same raw material also appears as sprays, raw resin and capsules.

Why does propolis tincture turn water milky?

The resins dissolved in the alcohol are not water-soluble, so when drops hit water they come out of solution as a fine suspension that looks milky or pale brown. It is a normal physical reaction, not a sign the product has spoiled.

What does "30%" on a propolis label mean?

Usually that 30 g of raw propolis was macerated per 100 ml of solvent. It is a recipe figure, not a measurement of the finished liquid: the wax and debris in raw propolis never dissolve, so dissolved-solids content varies between products with identical percentages. A published certificate of analysis for the batch is the only way to know what is actually in the bottle.

Is propolis sold as a food or a medicine in the UK?

As a food. No health claims for bee products are authorised on the Great Britain nutrition and health claims register, so sellers may not make any.
